Can you give notice of marriage without your partner present?

Yes, and in fact this is how it always works: you and your partner each attend your own notice appointment separately, even if you live at the same address. Neither of you needs the other to be present for your own appointment to proceed.

Why appointments are individual

Notice is a personal legal declaration, so each person must appear in front of a registrar themselves. This is true whether you live together, live apart, or live in different countries.

What you'll be asked

At your own appointment, you'll confirm your own identity and address, and also give details about your partner and your planned ceremony, so it helps to have their information — full name, date of birth, address — ready with you.

If your partner lives abroad or far away

If your partner cannot easily attend a register office in England or Wales, this needs separate consideration, since both of you generally need to give notice in person in the relevant jurisdiction before you can marry here.

What this means for you

  • You do not need to coordinate matching appointment times — you can each book whatever slot suits you.
  • If your partner is based overseas, check the rules for their situation before assuming a straightforward domestic appointment will work.
