How do you give notice of marriage if you live abroad?
If you live outside England and Wales, you generally still need to give notice in person at a register office here, which means you must be resident in the relevant district for at least seven full days before your appointment. This usually means arranging to stay in England or Wales for at least that period ahead of your wedding, so plan the logistics well in advance.
The seven-day residency requirement still applies
There is no remote or online route to give notice from overseas. You must be physically present and resident in your chosen district for at least the seven full days before your appointment, just as anyone else would be.
Planning your visit
If you're travelling from abroad specifically to give notice, factor in the seven-day residency period, appointment availability, and the subsequent 28-day notice period before you can actually marry — this adds up to a longer stay than many couples expect.
If one partner lives abroad and one lives in England or Wales
Each partner gives notice in the district where they live, so the partner already living in England or Wales gives notice locally as normal, while the other needs to establish the required residency before their own appointment.
Immigration status
If you are subject to immigration control, additional rules apply on top of residency, including potentially giving notice at a designated register office and a longer notice period — check this well ahead of travelling.
What this means for you
- Budget for a longer stay in England or Wales than just the wedding itself, to cover residency and notice requirements.
- If immigration control applies to you, start checking the designated register office and referral process early, since it affects timing significantly.
