How far ahead should you book your register office ceremony?
Booking your ceremony date is a separate step from giving notice, and it's worth doing much earlier — some register offices take bookings well over a year ahead, especially for popular Saturdays. Giving notice itself only needs to happen at least 28 days before the wedding, so the booking deadline, not the legal notice period, is usually what decides how far ahead you need to act.
Booking versus giving notice
These are two different appointments. Booking secures your date and room; giving notice is the legal declaration of your intent to marry, done later, closer to the day. Many couples book a date over a year ahead and then give notice only in the final months before it.
Why popular dates fill up early
Saturdays, spring and summer dates, and specific 'nice number' dates tend to be booked earliest, sometimes well over a year in advance at busy register offices. Weekday slots, and less popular months, usually stay available much closer to the date.
What to check when you call
Ask your chosen register office how far ahead they take bookings and whether a deposit secures the date. If you have a specific Saturday in mind, ask as early as you can rather than assuming you'll have time closer to the date.
- Ask how many months or years ahead the office takes bookings
- Ask if weekday slots have more availability than weekends
- Remember notice itself still needs to happen separately, at least 28 days before the day
What this means for you
- Book your date as soon as you know it, especially for a Saturday — this is usually the tighter constraint, not the legal notice period.
- Giving notice can wait until closer to the wedding, provided it's at least 28 (or 70) days beforehand.
- A flexible weekday date gives you far more room to book later without missing out.
