Marriage requirements in Wales
Wales applies the same marriage law as England: both parties must be at least 18, free to marry, not closely related, and able to consent. You give notice in person at the register office for the district where you live, and ceremonies can be conducted in Welsh, English or bilingually.
Same law, local delivery
Eligibility, notice periods and prohibited relationships are identical to England, because they come from the same legislation. What differs is how each local authority delivers the service.
Welsh-language options
Registration services in Wales can offer ceremonies in Welsh or bilingually, and can issue documentation bilingually. Tell the register office when you book so the right registrar is scheduled.
Cross-border couples
If one partner lives in Wales and the other in England, you each give notice in your own district under the same rules, and the notices are matched up for the ceremony.
What this means for you
- Do not expect different eligibility rules in Wales — the law is shared with England.
- Ask about Welsh-language provision early, as it affects registrar scheduling.
