'Legals first': getting married before your later celebration
A 'legals first' wedding means completing your legal marriage — the notice, the ceremony, the certificate — separately and often ahead of a larger celebration or blessing held on another date, sometimes even abroad. The legal ceremony still has to include the two required legal statements, but everything beyond that can happen later, wherever and however you like.
Why couples choose this route
This approach is common for couples planning to celebrate abroad, where a legally binding ceremony is complicated or expensive to arrange locally, or for those who simply want the legal side settled early without waiting for a big event to be organised.
It also suits couples who want a quiet, low-pressure legal ceremony and a separate, larger celebration with more planning time.
What still has to happen
The notice process, eligibility checks and required documents apply in exactly the same way as for any other marriage — there is no shortcut version because a bigger event is planned for later.
The legal ceremony itself must include the two prescribed declarations, so even a very short, simple ceremony cannot skip this wording.
The later event
A celebration, blessing or symbolic ceremony held afterwards has no legal status in England and Wales and does not need a registrar, venue licence or any of the notice paperwork, because the marriage is already legally complete.
What this means for you
- You still need to complete notice and book a genuine legal ceremony — there is no reduced process for this route.
- Anything held afterwards is a celebration only and carries no separate legal requirements.
