Can you marry abroad and have it recognised in the UK?

Yes, a marriage conducted validly under the law of the country you marry in is generally recognised in England and Wales, provided you both had the legal capacity to marry and followed that country's own legal requirements, not just a symbolic or religious ceremony with no local legal status. It is your responsibility to check and follow the destination country's process, not the UK's.

Follow the destination country's rules

Every country sets its own requirements for marrying there, including notice periods, residency rules and paperwork, which are often different from — and sometimes stricter than — those in England and Wales. Many countries require documents such as a Certificate of No Impediment, obtainable from a UK register office, as evidence you are free to marry.

Getting the marriage recognised back home

Once married abroad, you do not need to register the marriage again in the UK for it to be recognised, provided it was legally valid where it took place. You will usually need a certified copy, and sometimes a certified translation, of the foreign marriage certificate for UK purposes such as changing your name or immigration applications.

Symbolic ceremonies abroad

Some destination weddings, particularly at resorts, are symbolic only and have no legal effect in the country where they take place. If that is the case, you would need a separate legal marriage, either there or in the UK, for it to be recognised.

What this means for you

  • Check whether your destination wedding is legally binding there before assuming it counts as your legal marriage.
  • Start any UK document requests, such as a Certificate of No Impediment, well ahead of travelling.
