A 6-month marriage timeline
Six months gives generous margin over the legal minimums, so the priority shifts from speed to sequencing: confirm the venue early, give notice once details are firm, and use the spare time as a buffer against document delays or a referred notice.
Months 1-2: venue and documents
Confirm your ceremony date and venue, and start gathering identity, address and any 'free to marry' documents. Six months is enough time to reorder a lost passport or replacement decree absolute without it threatening your date.
Months 2-4: book and give notice
Book your notice appointments once the venue is confirmed. Giving notice around the four-to-five-month mark before the wedding leaves a wide safety margin even if your notice is referred for the 70-day wait.
Months 4-6: everything else
With the legal side settled, the remaining months are for the parts of the day that have nothing to do with the law — but keep an eye on the 12-month notice validity if your plans shift.
What this means for you
- Use the extra time as a buffer, not a reason to delay giving notice until the last minute.
- A six-month runway comfortably absorbs a 70-day referral if it applies to you.
