How long is notice of marriage valid for?
A notice of marriage is valid for 12 months from the date it was given. You must marry within that window, using the same details recorded on the notice; if your plans change beyond that period, or the details change materially, you will need to give notice again.
The 12-month window
Once notice is given and the waiting period has passed, you can marry any time within 12 months of the date notice was given. This gives couples flexibility to set a date well in advance, provided it falls inside that window.
What happens if you go past 12 months
If your ceremony date ends up outside the 12-month validity, the original notice lapses and you must attend a new notice appointment, pay any applicable fee again, and restart the waiting period.
Changing details after notice
Notice records specific information, including the ceremony venue. A material change — a different venue or a different type of ceremony, for example — can mean the notice no longer covers your wedding, so tell your register office promptly if plans shift.
What this means for you
- Do not give notice more than 12 months before your ceremony date.
- Confirm your venue before giving notice, since changing it afterwards can require a fresh notice.
