Proof of address for your marriage notice
You must show that you have lived in your notice district for at least the last seven full days, normally with a recent utility bill, council tax bill, bank statement or tenancy agreement in your name. Councils set their own rules on how recent the document must be.
What is usually accepted
Utility bills, council tax bills, bank or mortgage statements, tenancy agreements and driving licences showing the current address are the common options.
If you have recently moved
The seven-day rule bites hardest here. If you have moved within the last week, wait until you have completed seven full days before attending, and bring evidence dated from the new address.
If you live with family or a partner
Where nothing is in your name, offices often accept a letter from the householder together with other evidence. Arrange this in advance rather than turning up and hoping.
What this means for you
- Digital statements are often fine, but some offices still want a posted original — check first.
- Different addresses for the two of you means two register offices, not a problem.
