Marrying a partner who is in the UK on a student visa
A student visa does not stop you giving notice and marrying in England or Wales, but as a student visa holder is subject to immigration control, notice usually has to be given together at a designated register office and may be referred for Home Office checks. Marrying does not itself change or extend your student visa conditions.
Giving notice as a student visa holder
Because a student visa is a form of leave subject to immigration control rather than settled status, both of you will usually need to attend a designated register office together to give notice, even if only one partner is on a student visa.
Bring your passport, current visa or biometric residence permit, and evidence of your course and its end date, since register offices sometimes ask about the length of your stay when assessing a notice.
Fitting a wedding around term dates and visa length
Work out your visa expiry date first, then work backwards allowing for the standard 28-day notice period or, if referred, up to 70 days. A visa that expires soon after your intended wedding date leaves little room for delay.
Marriage and the visa itself
Getting married does not automatically extend a student visa or change its conditions. Any change to immigration status because of the marriage — such as switching to a partner route — is a separate application with its own rules and evidence requirements.
What this means for you
- Check your visa expiry date before booking a ceremony date, and build in margin for a possible referred notice.
- Bring course and visa evidence to the notice appointment, not just a passport.
- Speak to a regulated immigration adviser before assuming marriage changes your visa position.
