Renewal of vows vs legal marriage: what's the difference?

A vow renewal is a symbolic ceremony with no legal status, held by couples who are already legally married and want to mark an anniversary or reaffirm their commitment. If you want your marriage to be legally recognised again — for example after it lapsed for some reason — you would need to complete a full new legal marriage, including notice, not a renewal ceremony.

What a vow renewal actually is

A renewal of vows is a personal or religious ceremony, often held on a significant anniversary, that has no basis in marriage law and requires no registrar, notice or legal paperwork.

Because it has no legal effect, you can hold it wherever, however and as many times as you like — there is no requirement to involve an authorised person or register office.

Marrying the same person again, legally

If you and your partner want to complete a fresh legal marriage — for instance because your original marriage was never properly registered, or for personal reasons — that requires the full standard process again: notice, eligibility checks and a ceremony that includes the legal declarations.

There is no simplified process for couples who are, or were, already married to each other.

Choosing the right option

If your existing marriage is legally valid and you simply want to celebrate it again, a vow renewal is the appropriate choice. If there's any doubt about the legal status of your original marriage, check that first before assuming a renewal is all you need.

What this means for you

  • A vow renewal will not create or restore a legal marriage — treat it purely as a celebration.
  • If you need your marriage to be legally valid, you must go through notice and a proper ceremony again.
