How much do extra copies of your marriage certificate cost?
You can order as many certified copies of your marriage certificate as you need, each paid for individually — there is no discount for buying several at once. Most couples only need one or two, since organisations usually accept a certified copy rather than the original.
When you might need more than one
A single certified copy is enough for most purposes, because banks, passport applications and HMRC typically check it and return it. But if you're changing your name in several places at once, or applying for a visa that keeps the document, having a spare copy can save a delay while you wait for one to be posted back.
Some couples order one copy each so they don't need to share a single document between two sets of paperwork.
Ordering process and cost
Each certified copy is charged individually at the same fee, whether you order it on your wedding day, shortly afterwards, or years later. There's no bulk discount, so it's worth thinking about how many you'll actually use rather than over-ordering out of caution.
Ordering through the register office that holds your record, or the General Register Office, both work; ask your register office which is faster for your district.
Replacing a lost certificate
If a certificate is lost or damaged years later, you order a fresh certified copy in exactly the same way — there's no separate 'replacement' process or fee category, just another paid copy of the same register entry.
What this means for you
- Order only the copies you expect to actually use — extras don't cost less per copy.
- A certified copy is normally accepted in place of the original, so one or two is usually plenty.
- Losing a certificate later isn't a problem — you can simply order another certified copy.
