Getting married with access needs or a disability

You have the same right to marry as anyone else, and register offices and approved venues are expected to make reasonable adjustments so you can attend and take part in your ceremony. What is available varies by building and council, so raise your specific needs with the registration service as early as possible.

Physical access

Not every register office or historic venue is step-free or has accessible toilets. Ask directly about wheelchair access, seating, and routes into the ceremony room when you book, rather than assuming standard access.

Communication support

If you or your partner are D/deaf, hard of hearing, or need communication support during the ceremony, tell the register office in advance so they can consider options such as British Sign Language interpretation or written materials. Availability and any arrangements vary by council.

Adjustments to the ceremony itself

Registrars can often adapt pacing, seating and the format of the ceremony to accommodate energy levels, sensory needs or mobility. Discuss this at your notice appointment or beforehand so it can be planned rather than improvised on the day.

If travelling to a register office is not possible

Where illness or disability genuinely prevents you attending a register office or approved venue, the housebound person's provisions may apply, allowing notice and the ceremony to happen at home or in a care setting instead.

What this means for you

  • Ask about physical access, seating and communication support well before your appointment or ceremony date.
  • Provision varies significantly between register offices, so do not assume based on one council's website.
  • If attending in person is not realistic, ask about the housebound person's route instead.
