Getting married while serving in the armed forces
There is no separate legal marriage process for armed forces personnel marrying in England and Wales — you still give notice at your local register office and follow the standard 28-day notice period. The practical challenge is usually timing notice and the ceremony around postings, leave and deployment, so plan with as much lead time as your schedule allows.
Notice still needs local attendance
Notice must be given in person at the register office for the district where you have lived for the last seven days. If you are stationed away from where your partner lives, you each give notice locally to where you currently reside, which may mean giving notice near your base rather than your permanent home.
Planning around deployment
Deployment dates and leave are not always confirmed far in advance, which can make booking a ceremony date and notice appointments stressful. Build flexibility into your plans where you can, and keep your register office informed if dates are at risk of changing.
Ceremonies overseas or on military bases
If you are serving overseas and want to marry there, different rules apply depending on the host country and any relevant service arrangements — this is a different process from marrying in England and Wales and needs separate research with the relevant authorities.
What this means for you
- There is no fast-track or exemption from the standard notice period purely because of service status.
- You may need to give notice near your current posting rather than your home address, depending on where you have been living.
- Marrying overseas while serving is a separate process from marrying in England and Wales.
