Getting married after divorce

You can remarry once your divorce or dissolution is final. At your notice appointment you must produce the original final order — previously called the decree absolute — or the dissolution order. Copies are not accepted, and divorces granted abroad need extra evidence.

The document you need

The original final order or dissolution order, showing the court seal. If you cannot find it, apply to the court that issued it for a sealed copy — allow several weeks.

Divorces granted outside the UK

Overseas divorces must be recognised in England and Wales. Register offices may refer the papers for a decision, so bring them well in advance and expect additional questions and translation requirements.

Widowed rather than divorced

If a previous spouse or civil partner has died, bring the original death certificate along with your marriage certificate where the office asks for it.

What this means for you

  • Order the sealed copy today if the original is missing — it is the most common cause of a delayed notice.
  • Names must reconcile across your documents; bring the deed poll if you reverted to a former name.
